Over 95% of Coinbase’s code is now written with the help of AI.

Rob Wootoff, Head of Platform at Coinbase, reported that the share of AI-written code has risen from 40% in February to 95-100% today. “In fact, 100% of our employees use AI daily,” he said.

The degree of automation varies: prototyping is fully automated, basic cryptography is still written manually by experienced cryptographers line by line, and AI is mainly used for testing and vulnerability checking. The core of the systems lies somewhere in between.

These changes have allowed teams to be reorganized: two or three employees can now handle the workload that previously required more than 10 people. Most engineers simultaneously work with 5-10 AI agents, which collectively perform the work equivalent to about 1,200 employees. By 2030, according to Wootoff’s estimate, these agents will be able to handle the workload of 100,000 employees.

In May, Coinbase laid off 700 employees (14% of its workforce), citing the transition to AI as the reason.
